Anshun Countenance presents a compelling dialogue between ancestral heritage and contemporary artistic expression. This solo exhibition by emerging young artist Daisy Liu explores the living traditions of Anshun, a historic region in Southwest China renowned for its distinctive Tunpu culture and intricate craftsmanship, and their lasting impacts on her.
Through a diverse range of media including installations, oil on canvas, and tactile mixed media, the exhibition examines how pieces of Anshun, ranging from its unique street foods to hand-dyed batik, can be re-contextualized within a contemporary global framework. Together, these works invest the idea of "countenance"—the face of a place, the identity of its people, and the enduring spirit of a cultural heritage brought to the heart of New York City.
Daisy Liu is a young artist based in New York whose work is shaped by both her early childhood in China and her life in the United States, where she moved at the age of eight. Returning regularly to Anshun each summer, she continues to draw inspiration from these experiences while developing a distinctive artistic voice of her own. Her work has received recognition by the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards at both the regional and national levels.
