In this piece entitled Transcendence, Xu Zhongou uses the image of an unfolded walnut to construct a poetic landscape of spirit and life traveling through the mountains and rivers. In the center of the painting are layers upon layers of mountainlike lines, just like the obstacles and tests of a hard life, dividing the seemingly calm “plains” on either side of the painting. But it is precisely the existence of these mountains that cause the life trajectories on the east and west sides to ultimately converge, turn toward each other and course toward an encounter.
