In  this piece The Way, Xu invokes the deeply spiritual Eastern word “Dao” to      initiate a profound dialogue on “reform” and “writing” against a striking  red background. The walnut form at the center of the painting once again  becomes the spiritual receptacle for his expression of wisdom—this symbol of  durability and growth is entrusted in this work with a more fluid spiritual  connotation.
