It draws inspiration from the Hyakunin Isshu, an esteemed anthology of one hundred classical Japanese poems (waka), compiled during the culturally sophisticated Heian period (7th-12th centuries). Each side features excerpts from these revered poems, rendered in graceful calligraphy, reflecting the refined aesthetics and intellectual pursuits of Japan's historical aristocracy. Atop the burner stands a vividly sculpted guardian lion (shishi), a traditional emblem of strength, protection, and prosperity. Shimazaki artisans meticulously executed the intricate brushwork and vibrant floral patterns, capturing the enduring elegance and profound cultural resonance of Japan's classical literary tradition.
