Rock Music Period Archive Display

This display presents archival materials from 1993–1995, documenting Stone Chun Shi’s shift from painting toward rock music creation. During this period, the artist temporarily stepped away from the solitude of the studio and entered a high-intensity field shaped by sound, body, and emotion.

Stone has described painting as a natural talent, yet he came to realize that its quiet and contained nature could no longer carry the spontaneity and inner intensity he sought.Music emerged as an alternative outlet. Through close collaboration with drummers and bassists, he completed and released the heavy metal album A Rock Man on the Streets, which includes the track Moth.

At this stage, music functioned as an immediate, collective release of energy mediated through sound and the body. Rock was not merely a genre, but a way of life closely aligned with Stone’s inner temperament—direct, raw, and unfiltered.

These materials record a period of highly concentrated energy—intensely generated, amplified, and rapidly expended—before a visual language could take shape.

This rock music phase marks a critical prelude in Stone’s artistic trajectory: a moment when energy erupted before language emerged, and when the body and emotion were fully awakened prior to a return to painting.
