In  the Name of Writing No. 2 is Xu’s deep reconstruction and spiritual  exploration of the language of calligraphy in a contemporary context. The  work takes calligraphy as its form and “writing” as its name, intending to  break away from the “legibility” of traditional calligraphy and enter a more  free, abstract and expressive “pictorial function.” The Chinese characters in  the work are no longer regarded as symbols carrying semantics but instead are  transformed into a synthesized visual language of lines, color ink and  rhythm. In other words, they become a visual work with painting-like  attributes.
