4K Moving Image Work

Director / Cinematography: Zeng Han
Generative Visuals: Wu Haozheng
Music: Kenta Kamiyama

Grounded in photography, the work brings together images of Buddhist sculptures from the Dazu Rock Carvings, the Heart Sutra calligraphy of Master Hongyi, and generative algorithms, transforming artificial intelligence from a mere image-making tool into an active medium of visual transformation. Here, the algorithm does not fabricate a new reality; rather, through an endless cycle of generation and disappearance, it reveals the inherent indeterminacy of the image itself. Every form arises through dependent origination and ultimately returns to emptiness.

Moving from scripture to stone walls, from Buddha images to weathered traces, and from written language to blankness, the film employs digital imagery to engage with the Heart Sutra's philosophical conception of śūnyatā (emptiness). Emptiness is understood not as nihilism, but as the dynamic condition in which all phenomena arise through interdependence and remain in perpetual transformation. The work concludes by dissolving into a blank screen—not as an ending, but as an invitation for the act of seeing to return to the viewer. Over the course of this three-minute visual meditation, Guanzizai ("Contemplating Freedom") ceases to function merely as a scriptural phrase and instead becomes an experiential state of perception, awareness, and self-reflection.
